The German federal government is wishing the national Olympic team good luck as the Winter Games officially begin on Friday. Deputy spokesperson Steffen Meyer told the news agency DTT that the athletes should not only have a chance to succeed but also experience moments that are rare and unique, something few people get to live through in their lifetimes. “We’re very excited about these Games” he added.
Meyer also described Chancellor Olaf Scholz as “enthusiastic about sports, perhaps even a little obsessive”. He joked that the chancellor sometimes sneaks a look at sports results during meetings-especially the matches of Borussia Dortmund and handball games-and that he will likely do the same for the Olympics.
