The German federal government is still working on a solution to guarantee the smooth operation of the Schwedt refinery and to prevent looming bottlenecks in fuel supply. This was announced by a spokesperson for eastern affairs, Elisabeth Kaiser (SPD), on Monday.
The current situation poses a challenge, but there is no cause for concern because measures are being taken to secure supply stability. Kaiser described Schwedt as an “essential supply point for eastern Germany”. Accordingly, the site must be secured and made future‑proof, and she will closely monitor the evolving circumstances.
The government is pursuing a sanctions‑compliant solution to keep the PCK refinery in Schwedt running. Continuous work on such solutions is deemed vital for maintaining supply security.
The backdrop to these efforts is U.S. sanctions. Federal officials are negotiating with the U.S. Treasury to extend the production licence for the refinery, which is majority‑owned by German subsidiaries of the Russian firm Rosneft. The current suspension of sanctions is temporary and remains in effect until April 29.
