German Green Leader Urges Europe to Free Imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize Winner Narges Mohammadi

Vice‑President of the German Bundestag Omid Nouripour, a member of the Greens, has urged European politicians to take a stronger stand on the case of Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian Nobel Peace laureate now in custody. In an interview with newspapers of the Funke Media Group, he said that Mohammadi had recently been beaten in prison and moved to a secret facility-a development that has alarmed her family. He added that the silence of European governments on this matter is deafening.

Nouripour warned that when dissidents in Iran receive little attention, they have no protection, a weakness that the regime exploits. “Europe must say unmistakably that Narges Mohammadi must be released immediately” he said, insisting that this principle should extend to all political prisoners.

Behind the drama lies a broader context of repression in Iran, where repeated protests have little leadership and a clear voice. Nouripour cited Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the former Shah, who has presented himself as someone capable of organizing a democratic transition. He emphasized that ultimately the Iranian people should decide who will take on that role.
