The Green Party leader, Franziska Brantner, sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump following his recent address in which he denounced NATO allies and threatened to “burn them up” with diplomatic means. Brantner told the German editorial network that Trump’s remarks show a policy of escalation and aimlessness. “Anyone openly fantasizing about dropping a country back into the stone age proves he stands outside a responsible international order” she said. She described Trump’s tirades as not a strategy but a kind of arson conducted through foreign‑policy tools.
Brantner warned that the United States, under Trump, has ceased to be a trustworthy partner and has become a risk factor for the trans‑Atlantic alliance. “The partnership is no longer being maintained; it is actively being damaged” she added. Although she acknowledges NATO remains a central pillar of German defence, she insists that Germany must finally develop the ability to act independently when necessary. “A genuine European defence union is no longer an abstract goal but a security necessity” she urged, adding that anyone who now hesitates is partly responsible for what may follow.
Trump’s televised speech claimed the U.S. was on a path to reach all of its military objectives “very soon” while promising that Iran would face “extremely hard strikes” within the next two to three weeks, sending it “back to the stone age where it belongs”. Earlier, he had referred to NATO members as “cowards” and threatened to withdraw the United States from the alliance.
