German Groups Urge Protection for At-Risk Afghans

Dozens of organizations are urging the German government to take immediate action to protect vulnerable Afghans who have been promised admission to Germany.

An open letter addressed to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and reported on by the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland newspapers, calls on the government to act “before it is too late for many of those affected”. The letter is signed by prominent organizations including Amnesty International Germany, the German Caritas Association, Reporters Without Borders and Medico International, with the German Bar Association (DAV) serving as the initiator.

The appeal follows recent reports of Afghans with existing commitments for relocation to Germany being deported from Pakistan back to Afghanistan. The organizations specifically request a significant reduction in the processing time for security checks and visa applications, alongside immediate evacuation efforts for Afghans with confirmed admission promises currently residing in Pakistan.

The letter emphasizes the need for increased coordination between Germany, Pakistan, international partners and civil society organizations to prevent deportations and detention, while facilitating safe departures. The organizations highlight Germany’s “special responsibility” towards individuals who have demonstrated commitment to democratic principles, human rights and the rule of law in Afghanistan, making them particularly vulnerable targets within the country.
