The German agricultural sector is facing potential upheaval following a legal assessment that has deemed exemptions from minimum wage laws for seasonal workers unlawful. The assessment, commissioned by Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer, has prompted a sharp warning from the German Farmers’ Association regarding the future viability of fruit, vegetable and wine production.
Association President Joachim Rukwied voiced deep concern, characterizing the ruling as a “black day” for domestic fruit, vegetable and wine production. He specifically highlighted the imminent threat to specialist farms, suggesting that numerous businesses are now facing potential collapse.
Rukwied argued that the decision undermines any commitments to supporting domestic agriculture and places German farmers at a significant disadvantage in the European market. He predicts a continued shift in production overseas, leading to higher prices for consumers and potentially contributing to increased inflation. The Farmers’ Association suggests that domestically produced fruits and vegetables will become considerably more expensive.
