Preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) indicate a slight decrease in the number of employed individuals residing in Germany during June 2025. Approximately 45.9 million people were employed, representing a seasonal adjustment decline of 20,000 compared to the previous month. This contraction follows a similar reduction observed in May 2025, when the number of employed individuals fell by 18,000.
When not seasonally adjusted, the number of employed individuals decreased by a smaller amount, 4,000, when compared to May 2025. This contrasts with the period between June 2022 and June 2024, during which employment typically rose by an average of 41,000 individuals month-on-month. The overall number of employed individuals in June 2025 remained nearly unchanged when compared to June 2024, with a slight decrease of 3,000. The change rate concerning the previous year’s month was also 0.0 percent in May (+11,000 individuals).
For the entirety of the second quarter of 2025, preliminary calculations estimate the average number of employed individuals with workplaces in Germany at approximately 46.0 million. This represents a minor seasonal adjustment decline of 7,000 individuals compared to the previous quarter.
According to labor force survey results, 1.58 million individuals were recorded as unemployed in June 2025. This figure represents an increase of 76,000 individuals, or 5.1 percent, compared to June 2024. Consequently, the unemployment rate rose to 3.6 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the 3.4 percent recorded in June 2024.
Adjusting for seasonal and irregular factors, the number of unemployed individuals in June 2025 stood at 1.61 million, a slight decrease of 3,000 individuals (0.2 percent) compared to the previous month. The adjusted unemployment rate remained constant at 3.7 percent.
