German Labor Minister Bärbel Bas Criticized for Only Two Factory Trips Since Taking Office in May 2025

Since taking office in May, Federal Labour Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD) has only conducted two on‑site visits to companies. According to the Saturday edition of “Bild”, citing information from the Ministry of Labour (BMAS), she attended a meeting of the “Allianz für Aus‑ und Weiterbildung” at the Aqua‑Campus of Berlin’s waterworks on 10 November 2025 and visited ABB AG’s training centre in Berlin on 21 January 2026. The BMAS did not list any additional company visits at the “Bild”‘s request.

In addition to those onsite calls, Bas has met with representatives of Volkswagen, Deutsche Bahn, and with union and works‑board representatives from Thyssenkrupp. These meetings, however, did not involve a company visit. The article further reports that, since her inauguration, she has held a total of 15 meetings with employer representatives, including the Bundesvereinigung der Deutschen Arbeitgeberverbände (BDA), Deutsche Industrie‑ und Handelskammer (DIHK), Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE), and Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks (ZDH). She has also met with employee representatives from the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (DGB), IG Metall, Industriegewerkschaft Bergbau, Chemie, Energie (IG BCE), IG BAU, Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft (GEW), Sozialverband VdK Deutschland (VdK), Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD), Bundesverband der Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), and the Paritätische Gesamtverband-bringing the total number of employee‑side meetings to 21.
