German Leader Demands Renewable Energy Boost Amid Iran‑War‑Triggered Energy Crisis

Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister, Daniel Günther of the CDU, has urged Germany to accelerate the development of renewable energy in light of the war in Iran.

He told the “Spiegel” that the Russian invasion of Ukraine had clearly exposed the fragility of economies that remain dependent on fossil‑fuel imports for key sectors. “The conflict has shown how vulnerable we are when we rely too heavily on imported fossil fuels” Günther said.

Günther highlighted that Schleswig-Holstein has long prioritized a decisive shift toward renewables. “Wind and solar power not only strengthen climate protection, but they also increase our energy sovereignty and provide greater economic certainty” he added.

He stressed that energy policy is, in effect, security policy. “Germany and Europe must act decisively now, reduce structural dependencies on fossil‑fuel imports, and push forward the expansion of renewable energy” Günther said. “We need to make our energy supply system long‑term safer and more independent”.
