The annual rise in consumer prices in Germany accelerated sharply in March against the backdrop of the Middle‑East conflict. The Federal Statistical Office said on Friday that inflation is expected to be 2.7 percent, up from 1.9 percent in February. Compared with the previous month, prices rose by about 1.1 percent in March.
Core inflation-prices excluding food and energy-was projected to be 2.5 percent, the same level as in the two preceding months, and now, for the first time in a long while, lower than the headline index.
Energy costs were 7.2 percent higher than a year earlier in March, marking the first monthly increase since December 2023. Food prices rose by 0.9 percent, while service prices increased by 3.2 percent.
