The potential sale of Mercedes’ manufacturing plant in Ludwigsfelde to the defense contractor KNDS is facing delays and might even fail, according to reports cited by the “Handelsblatt” from industry sources. The primary obstacle is a multi-billion euro order for armored vehicles-the “Arminius” project-which has yet to be placed within the German Armed Forces’ planning.
According to the information, Mercedes and KNDS are largely in agreement on the fundamental goal: Mercedes wishes to divest the van factory near Berlin, and the German-French armored vehicle manufacturer is interested in acquiring the plant or at least utilizing parts of its production capacity. However, KNDS has made the deal contingent upon securing the substantial “Arminius” order. This order was initially expected in early 2026, but the final quantity of vehicles remains unspecified. If the actual volume of contracts falls below expectations, KNDS would be manufacturing significantly fewer tanks and would, consequently, not require the Mercedes capacity.
KNDS clarified that the industry had submitted a bid for “Arminius” in order to meet the German Armed Forces’ required capabilities. They stated they are currently engaged in constructive discussions with the customer, which makes decisions regarding timetables and procurement. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Mercedes indicated that the company’s objective is to develop a viable, long-term solution for Ludwigsfelde, with the interests of the roughly 1,800 employees being prioritized.
Mercedes is operating under significant time constraints. If KNDS is unable to purchase the plant due to insufficient orders, the automaker would have to seek an alternative buyer or, in the worst-case scenario, shut down the facility. Internally, a sale is viewed as the best course of action because it is believed to secure the majority of the jobs. The “Handelsblatt” had previously reported at the end of May that Mercedes was considering a sale and that KNDS had shown interest.
