German Minister Calls for Gaza Ceasefire

Calls are growing within Germany for increased national engagement in advocating for a cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Federal Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) voiced her concern during an interview with the “Rheinische Post” emphasizing the urgent need for a swift and lasting ceasefire.

Minister Alabali Radovan recently returned from the region and stated that discussions confirmed the imperative for immediate action. She expressed understanding of a letter signed by 29 nations – including the United Kingdom, France and Italy – urging an end to the conflict in Gaza. She indicated a desire for Germany to formally align itself with this collective statement.

The minister highlighted the dire humanitarian situation unfolding within Gaza, stressing that the civilian population is bearing the brunt of the ongoing conflict. She underscored the necessity of providing access to essential resources such as water, food and medical care, alongside ensuring safety for vulnerable populations including children, families and the elderly.

Alabali Radovan urged the Israeli government to adhere to international law, enabling the unimpeded flow of aid deliveries, establishing secure humanitarian corridors and allowing unrestricted access for the United Nations and humanitarian organizations. She declared that the protection of civilians, especially children, must be prioritized.

The minister concluded with a call for collective responsibility, asserting that the international community, including Europe, has a duty to do everything possible to end the violence and save lives. She emphasized that the current situation is unsustainable and requires immediate, concerted action.
