German Minister Calls for Safety

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has underscored the critical need for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian workers worldwide, highlighting the immense risks they face in delivering aid. Speaking on Tuesday, he noted that over 600 humanitarian workers have lost their lives in the last two years while carrying out their duties.

Wadephul emphasized the vital role humanitarian assistance plays in fostering security and stability, ultimately paving the way for peaceful resolutions to conflict. He affirmed that humanitarian engagement remains indispensable in a world marked by ongoing crises and disputes. Germany, he stated, recognizes its responsibility and continues to be a reliable partner in global emergency relief as one of the world’s largest donor nations.

The Minister highlighted Germany’s commitment to providing aid not only during immediate emergencies, but also to addressing the needs of those impacted by long-term crises often overlooked by mainstream media. He specifically cited ongoing assistance programs in Sudan focused on alleviating hunger, emergency aid provided to Myanmar in the wake of a devastating earthquake, support for displaced families in Ukraine and efforts to secure access for those in dire need within the Gaza Strip.

Referring to the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “unbearable” Wadephul detailed that Germany has allocated over 335 million euros in assistance since 2023. He stressed that such aid delivery would be impossible without the dedication and bravery of humanitarian workers, extending heartfelt gratitude to them on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, acknowledging the significant personal risks they undertake to assist others.
