Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD) expressed displeasure regarding the current debates surrounding the deportation of Syrians. According to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), she stated that it is frustrating to hear suggestions implying that people from Syria must “finally” contribute to reconstruction. She refuted this, asserting that they are already doing so-in very concrete and successful ways.
The Minister announced her intention to incorporate the expertise of diaspora communities into German development cooperation much more strongly. She cited recent discussions at the annual platform dedicated to “A New Beginning for Syria” where various participants noted that they have long been contributing to the rebuilding efforts while also being established and integral parts of German society.
Radovan remarked that the focus on repatriation debates causes confusion, emphasizing that this expertise and contribution are needed on all fronts.
