German Minister Defends Israel Arms Aid Decision Amid Criticism

Germany’s Minister of State for Culture, Wolfram Weimer, has defended Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s decision to scale back arms deliveries to Israel, acknowledging criticism even within the governing coalition. In remarks to the Funke Media Group newspapers, Weimer asserted that the Merz administration remains a staunch ally of Israel within Europe.

“Within Europe, the Federal Government and particularly Friedrich Merz, is the most loyal friend of Israel of all” he stated. He characterized the decision regarding arms exports as a legitimate adjustment, maintaining it does not alter the government’s fundamental position of support.

Weimer further highlighted differing opinions regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, noting such disagreements exist within Israel itself, including amongst the General Staff and intelligence agencies. He emphasized that the Hamas organization possesses the power to de-escalate the conflict immediately, contingent upon releasing hostages and agreeing to a previously negotiated ceasefire.

Addressing considerations of accepting individuals from Gaza into Germany, Weimer responded cautiously. He indicated a primary responsibility lies with regional Arab nations, specifically citing Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, all of whom he described as currently behaving constructively in addressing the situation.
