German Minister Highlights Strong Ties with Japan

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the strong ties between Germany and Japan prior to embarking on a visit to both Japan and Indonesia. Speaking on Sunday, he highlighted shared values and common interests as the foundation of the relationship, noting that both nations face similar challenges on the international stage.

Wadephul stated that maintaining freedom requires increased investment in national security for both Germany and Japan. He pointed to China’s increasingly assertive behavior in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas as having repercussions beyond the Asia-Pacific region, impacting Europe as well. “Fundamental principles of global interaction are at stake” he argued, outlining a shared commitment to an international order based on the rule of law and universally accepted norms.

The security of global trade routes and supply chains, particularly within the Indo-Pacific region, is critical to worldwide economic development, Wadephul explained. This is of paramount importance not only to major exporting nations like Germany and Japan, but also to emerging economies within the ASEAN region, such as Indonesia.

Economically, significant challenges are present. Wadephul cited unfair and market-distorting trade practices from China and the uncertainty created by US trade policies as impacting businesses in both Europe and Asia. He stressed the importance of building resilience through diversified sourcing of raw materials and establishing multiple supply channels.

“Germany, together with key partners like Japan and Indonesia, is therefore advocating for economic relations based on free trade, competition and fairness” Wadephul affirmed. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to finalize a free trade agreement between the EU and Indonesia as a crucial step forward, while noting the potential for Germany to learn from Japan’s leading role in economic security.
