German Minister Plans Crackdown on Big Tech Platforms

Germany is poised to launch a comprehensive initiative aimed at rebalancing the influence of major internet platforms. Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer announced plans to present a series of proposals this autumn, addressing legal considerations across tax, competition and regulatory frameworks.

A key component of the initiative centers on the potential implementation of a levy on digital platforms – a “solidarity surcharge” – to generate significant revenue. Minister Weimer anticipates this could yield billions to bolster Germany’s media landscape and reduce reliance on dominant American and Chinese companies.

Weimer expressed confidence in securing support for these proposals, citing broad consensus across the political spectrum. He stated he has already garnered considerable support within the Bundestag from parties including the CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens, referencing a commitment outlined within the governing coalition agreement.

Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding minimum age requirements for social media usage, Weimer signaled a cautious approach. While supporting Education Minister Prien’s efforts to examine excessive social media consumption among younger age groups, he emphasized the need for a holistic strategy. He highlighted a growing confluence of political and media power exemplified by platforms like TikTok and Google, a dynamic he declared unacceptable and requiring careful consideration.
