German Minister‑President Urges Urgent Reforms After AfD Surge in Rhineland‑Palatinate Election

After the state election in Rheinland‑Pfalz, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister‑President Daniel Günther (CDU) called on the federal government to implement fast reforms. “We have to tackle these issues decisively now” the CDU politician told the portal Politico.

He interpreted the AfD’s strong showing as a warning sign. “This is clear evidence that many people are expecting reforms” he said. Günther also urged the SPD to heed the message, especially given its weaker foothold among workers.

When discussing concrete measures, Günther highlighted citizen relief while stressing the need for broad social‑sector reforms. “We must also address big changes in pensions, nursing‑care insurance, and health care” he added.

Günther believes the federal government is fundamentally capable of reform. He cited the willingness of Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil to take the necessary steps. “I believe this can only be the conclusion of the Social Democrats” he said.

Simultaneously, he held his own party to account: “What I have said about the SPD applies to us as the Union as well. We must now deliver” he remarked, looking ahead to upcoming state elections.
