German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) called for Russia to end the war in Ukraine and sit down at the negotiating table. Speaking during the UN General Debate in New York on Saturday, Wadephul stated, “I call on every member state to join us in persuading Russia that the future will be determined at the negotiating table, not in the bodies of people in cities and villages. The day these negotiations finally begin will be a good day for the United Nations.”
The minister added that Russia’s war targets the lives of millions of innocent people, the existence of the Ukrainian state and culture, and the European peace order. He noted that the war endangers vital aid deliveries crucial for millions, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Wadephul stressed that the conflict demonstrates contempt for the UN Charter and “for the shared order upon which we stand. Therefore, we will continue to urge Russia emphatically to finally come to the negotiating table.”
He also affirmed Germany’s commitment to peace and security, emphasizing the necessity of uniting forces to conclude conflicts. “Today, Germany is the biggest supporter of Ukraine and its defense against Russian aggression. This aggression has been consistently condemned by an overwhelming majority here in the General Assembly,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
