Politicians from the CDU and SPD are urging Federal Finance Minister Katharina Reiche (CDU) to roll out the proposed Austria‑style limit on gasoline price increases next week.
“Now the one‑time‑per‑day rule has to be implemented quickly, ideally already next week” said Armand Zorn, deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group, in an interview with the “Bild” (Thursday edition).
Zorn said the SPD would be ready to act: “If the Ministry of Finance cannot enforce this through an ordinance, our members would immediately support a legislative amendment” he told the newspaper, addressing the Union faction.
Reiche had announced that petrol stations would be allowed to raise fuel prices only once a day. She did not yet specify a start date.
The CDU/CSU deputy parliamentary chairman, Sepp Müller, also called for speed. “We will push for prompt implementation and closely monitor the measure through the task force in the medium term” Müller told the media. “In the short run we expect the price increase to be dampened by tapping into the oil reserve”.
Sachsen‑Anhalt’s Minister‑President Sven Schulze (CDU) echoed the call. “Berlin must not postpone this issue” he said. The federal government should make it a priority and decide by the end of next week at the latest.
Shleswig‑Holstein CDU state parliament member Rasmus Vöge added to the pressure. “The Bundestag has already set up the ‘rescue umbrella’ for banks within a few days. That must also become accessible to German motorists now” he told the paper. “The new rule should come into effect no later than the end of next week”.
