Germany’s antisemitism commissioner, Felix Klein, has accused the Left Party (Die Linke) of a growing trend of hostility towards Israel. In remarks published Saturday, Klein stated that increasingly extreme anti-Israel positions are being observed within the party, including among members of the Bundestag. He also noted a perceived decline in visible opposition to antisemitic expressions of anti-Israel sentiment within the party itself, characterizing this as a concerning development.
Klein specifically cited a planned event in Berlin this Saturday hosted by a local Left Party chapter in cooperation with the “United Palestinian National Committee”. Referencing a report by Berlin’s state security agency, he described the committee as an umbrella organization with close ties to supporters of both the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Hamas. He asserted that this collaboration aligns with a pattern of behavior exhibited by some members and officials within the Left Party in recent weeks and months.
Acknowledging the distressing images of suffering and hardship emanating from Gaza, Klein emphasized that while highlighting the plight of civilians is important, failing to unequivocally distance oneself from extremist terrorist organizations undermines credibility. He suggested that a clear condemnation of these groups is essential when addressing the humanitarian crisis.
