German Official Condemns Potential Links to Extremism

Concerns regarding the allocation of funding to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have prompted discussions within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann expressed the expectation that Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) will reconsider certain increases in funding for these organizations.

Linnemann, in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag” stated that providing financial support to institutions, organizations, or groups exhibiting even a trace of antisemitism, Islamism, far-right extremism, or far-left extremism is unacceptable and must be halted.

The CDU General Secretary indicated that Minister Prien shares this concern. While acknowledging that some programs with existing, binding commitments may continue, he affirmed that a review of the funding is planned, including during budget negotiations for 2026. The focus will be to ensure that public funds are directed to organizations adhering to strict ethical and societal standards.
