According to the latest financial forecast from the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung), the pension contribution for average earners is projected to increase by 510 euros in 2028 compared to 2027. This steeper rise, reported by the “Handelsblatt” referencing pension expert Martin Werding of the Council of Experts, surpasses the previous expectation of an increase of around 480 euros.
Werding noted that the monthly increase would amount to approximately 42 euros, up from the previously estimated 40 euros. Since employers contribute half of the pension fee, their contributions will also rise proportionally. Furthermore, according to Werding’s calculations, the total revenue for the pension insurance will increase more significantly than anticipated, rising from about 324 billion euros in 2027 to approximately 355 billion euros in 2028.
The expert explained that the core issue is not simply the correction to the expected contribution rate for 2028, but rather the drastic onset of demographic dynamics. Following the new spring forecast released by the German Pension Insurance, the contribution rate is slated to increase to 19.9 percent in 2028. Previously, in the autumn of 2025, the pension insurance had forecast a rate of 19.8 percent. Until that time, the rate is expected to remain stagnant at the currently established 18.6 percent.
