German Police Union Demands Urgent Security Overhaul for Trains After Conductor’s Murder

The Police Union (GdP) has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased train guard and is demanding tighter security measures on trains.

“We wish the family much strength. A new dimension of violence has been reached” said Andreas Roßkopf, chairman for the Federal Police sector of the GdP, in a statement quoted by the Thursday edition of the “Rheinische Post”. He added that the Union has long recognized the growing crime and brutality in the railway sector and has repeatedly called for increased staffing in this area. Roßkopf noted that on certain routes at certain times train conductors are no longer able to work alone because the danger is too great.

Immediate action is needed, Roßkopf warned, and he said that lip‑service from those in charge is no longer acceptable. He urged a rapid and decisive increase in personnel for both the Federal Police and Deutsche Bahn security. The Union is calling for nationwide patrols in groups of three, artificial‑intelligence‑supported camera surveillance, and clear authority for controls to protect passengers and staff.
