German Police Union Pushes Photo‑ID for Germany Ticket to Enhance Train Security

The Police Union (GdP) supports a proposal by Rhineland-Palatinate’s premier, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), to introduce a nationwide, uniform DeutschlandTicket that includes a photo ID for enhanced safety on trains.

GdP’s head of the Federal Police branch, Andreas Roßkopf, told the Rheinische Post (Tuesday edition) that travelers often react with confusion when train conductors ask for identity documents. “Putting a passport photo on the ticket would spare the need for that check” he said.

Roßkopf added that, in some instances, the verification process can even lead to verbal escalations and physical altercations. As a result, Federal Police officers are repeatedly called upon to carry out person verification. He concluded that personalizing especially subscription tickets is, therefore, a sensible measure.
