A leading German parliamentarian has launched a scathing critique of a proposed US peace plan for Ukraine, branding it a “capitulation plan” that would reward Russian aggression and fundamentally undermine European security. Roderich Kiesewetter, a prominent defense policy spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and currently in Lviv, Ukraine, voiced his concerns in an interview with Bavarian media outlets.
Kiesewetter argued the plan, reportedly spearheaded by US officials Witkoff and Dmitriev, represents a tacit acceptance of Russian territorial gains and would likely embolden further acts of aggression and displacement. “This would embolden Russia to commit more crimes, trigger more refugee flows and ultimately expand the war” he stated. He urged a unified European rejection of the plan, delivered at the highest level of government.
The German MP’s criticism extends beyond the proposed settlement, placing significant blame on Europe’s perceived hesitancy in providing robust support for Ukraine. He specifically called for an immediate and decisive shift in policy, including the supply of Taurus missiles to Kyiv, a coalition-led assumption of air defense responsibilities over western Ukraine to bolster Ukrainian air defenses and a substantial increase in military and financial aid, especially from Germany.
“Europe has failed” Kiesewetter asserted, contrasting the actions of the Baltic states and Poland (which he noted are investing a significant portion of their GDP in military support) with the perceived inaction of much of Western Europe. He accused many European nations of passively deferring to Washington, neglecting their own security responsibilities and failing to proactively support Ukraine’s defense. The need, he emphasized, is for a comprehensive “victory plan” for Ukraine, powered by a renewed commitment from Europe to take decisive action on its own terms.
