German Politician Urges Hungarian Successor to Collaborate for a Stronger Europe

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) offered his congratulations to Péter Magyar following his victory in the election. On Sunday evening, Merz stated, “I warmly congratulate the Hungarian election winner, Péter Magyar, on his convincing success”.

The Chancellor added that he had already spoken with Magyar by phone, conveying his best wishes for the considerable task ahead. He expressed confidence that, “we will cooperate powerfully for a strong, secure, and above all, united Europe”.

Previously, other prominent figures had also congratulated Magyar, including French President Emmanuel Macron, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU), and EVP leader Manfred Weber (CSU). Von der Leyen noted that Hungary was returning to its European path and that the European Union would grow stronger. Macron interpreted Magyar’s election win as evidence of Hungary’s commitment to the values of the European Union and a demonstration of the country’s standing in Europe through democratic participation. Weber told “Der Spiegel” that following Viktor Orbán’s defeat, the right-wing populists in Europe would lose their “figurehead”.

According to estimates from the national election office, Magyar’s party, Tisza, is leading significantly, while Orbán is predicted to lose power after 16 years in office. With current preliminary counts suggesting 87.82 percent of the votes, Tisza is estimated to secure 138 out of 199 seats, which would grant the newly represented party a two-thirds majority capable of constitutional amendments.

Orbán’s party, Fidesz, which won 135 seats jointly with the coalition partner KDNP in the last election, is expected to suffer a significant drop, potentially falling to 54 deputies. Meanwhile, the Mi Hazánk Mozgalom movement is estimated to receive 7 seats.
