German Politicians See Gaza Deal Within Reach

Leading figures from Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have expressed cautious optimism regarding the potential for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Gaza. Norbert Röttgen, CDU’s Foreign Policy Spokesperson and Deputy Parliamentary Group Chair, stated that US President Trump’s call for Israel to immediately cease bombardment of Gaza presents an opportunity for the release of all hostages and an end to the hostilities. He emphasized the need for full support of this development, placing responsibility on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to contribute to the release of hostages and a political pathway forward.

The sentiment was echoed by Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s Foreign Policy Spokesperson in the Bundestag, who described a recent breakthrough as offering “cautious optimism”. He noted that Hamas has reportedly agreed to portions of a 20-point peace plan, while Trump has publicly urged Netanyahu to end the war. Ahmetovic highlighted the positive shift towards a diplomatic solution that could alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, secure the release of hostages and lead to the demilitarization of Hamas.

Both politicians underscored the importance of all parties strictly adhering to international law and contractual agreements, including explicitly rejecting the annexation of the West Bank. However, acknowledging past setbacks, Ahmetovic urged for sustained international pressure and a strong role for the United Nations and other mediators to ensure the agreed-upon goals are achieved credibly and swiftly. He concluded by advocating for Germany and Europe to proactively engage in the diplomatic arena to safeguard this potential turning point.
