German Red Cross Calls for Robust Funding of Volunteer Services Ahead of Planned Reform

The German Red Cross (DRK) cautions that the federal government’s plans to overhaul volunteer services need a solid financing foundation. “Currently, completing a volunteer service still often fails because of insufficient pocket money, so many young people can’t afford it” said Nadja Saborowski, deputy head of the Youth and Welfare Care division, in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition). “For organizations like the DRK, it is essential that there is finally adequate, multi‑year funding to provide stability and reliability for both staff and facilities”.

Saborowski welcomed the announcement that Federal Minister for Education and Family, Karin Prien (CDU), intends to submit a draft bill later this year. “A strong civilian counterpart to military service is urgently needed to increase civic engagement and make society more resilient to crises” she explained. “Whether the volunteer services truly advance will hinge on the concrete details of the legislation”.
