The president of the German Red Cross, Hermann Gröhe, has criticized the large number of humanitarian workers who have been killed in conflicts worldwide and is calling for a stronger enforcement of international humanitarian law.
He told the Sunday editions of the Funke Media Group that more than 300 helpers were murdered last year while carrying out aid for others, many of them belonging to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Gröhe described the situation as “unbearable”.
According to the DRK president, the tragedy is not just a collection of individual losses but reflects a broader disregard for basic humanitarian principles. The aid workers, fighting under harsh conditions and great risk to ease the suffering of others, exemplify solidarity.
Gröhe stressed that it is crucial for the rules governing armed conflict-humanitarian law-to be respected again, and for the law to be fully enforced worldwide.
