Klöckner noted a growing trend of political bloc-building in many Western democracies, both within society and within parliamentary systems She described national parliaments as key focal points for societal conflict, yet also as potential spaces for resolution “With the power of free speech, we can build bridges, provide guidance and make decisions that counter division” she stated
The conference agenda also includes discussions on combating disinformation and safeguarding parliamentarians from threats and violence Klöckner emphasized the increasing sophistication and frequency of campaigns designed to undermine public trust in institutions “We must be resilient – and discerning” she said, adding that open debate within the democratic spectrum must not be suppressed and that any actions taken must avoid the appearance of arbitrariness
On the sidelines of the September 4th and 5th conference, Klöckner is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts, including US House Speaker Mike Johnson, the Canadian host and the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk
