Thousands of students again marched in several German cities on Thursday to protest the federal government’s latest military‑service proposals. The call was issued by the coalition “School Strike Against Conscription” which in December had urged pupils not to attend school that Thursday and instead strike against conscription and all forms of compulsory service. The coalition rejects the government’s plans as “first steps toward a re‑introduction of conscription”.
According to the alliance, more than 55,000 students have already taken to the streets in opposition to the measures, and they expect a similarly strong turnout this time. Demonstrations were held nationwide, with large crowds gathering in many municipal centers. In Berlin, for instance, many young people assembled around Potsdamer Platz in the early morning.
There is, however, no compulsory military service in place at the moment. Since January the German armed forces have sent letters containing a questionnaire to all 18‑year‑olds. Men are required to complete the form, while women may do so voluntarily. From mid‑2027 onwards, men will be obliged to report for conscription.
