The German Panzerbrigade 45 deployment to Lithuania represents a significant contribution to NATO’s collective defense posture, according to the brigade’s commander, Christoph Huber. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Monday, General Huber emphasized the importance of the presence, stating, “We are defending our values here in Lithuania.

The newly established Panzerbrigade 45 is slated to achieve a permanent operational readiness in the Baltic nation by the end of 2027, encompassing a force of approximately 5,000 personnel. Huber described the brigade as “a strong German contribution to NATO deterrence and defense capability” highlighting its commitment to safeguarding the alliance’s principles.

The brigade will be equipped with a comprehensive suite of military assets, including Leopard 2R8 main battle tanks, Puma S1 infantry fighting vehicles and advanced artillery systems. Recognizing the evolving nature of modern warfare, Huber also underscored the necessity of incorporating drone systems for reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities.

Addressing concerns regarding potential shifts in U.S. policy and the possibility of NATO allies being left unsupported, particularly in the strategically vital Baltic region, General Huber expressed confidence in the alliance’s solidarity. He also acknowledged the potential threat to the Suwalki Corridor, a crucial land connection between Poland and the Baltic states, stating that the brigade is actively preparing for “all scenarios” including its protection. Huber affirmed the brigade’s readiness to defend “every centimeter of NATO alliance territory”.
