The Taxpayers’ Association has urged a “fair” spread of costs for the evacuation flights out of the Gulf region. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Saturday, Reiner Holznagel said, “It is clear that the state must step in in such cases – but it must also be clear to those affected that they should share part of the expenses so that the cost‑distribution remains fair”.
He added that tour operators have a role to play: “They received money for arranging return flights that are now not taking place, so they must be involved. Ultimately, what matters is that Germany helps and its citizens are back on safe ground soon”.
Holznagel pointed to earlier evacuations, noting that questions were raised whenever a sense of imbalance arose. “We always confirmed that the state had not issued a blanket all‑inclusive package; travelers were always expected to contribute to the costs” he said.
He concluded by stressing the need for government transparency: “Overall, it is important that the state handles this situation openly, because many people look at evacuation operations with bafflement – they must be told that nothing is happening for free”.
