Despite the modest outcome of the meeting, the Union caucus expressed satisfaction with the coalition summit that took place on Wednesday evening.
“We decided that such sessions should not only happen when there is a major crisis on the table” said First Parliamentary Executive Officer Steffen Bilger to RTL and ntv on Thursday. He called the meeting a “middling” one. “We talked about a lot of things, but there were also concrete decisions”.
Bilger explained that the preparatory work carried out by the government meant that the Bundestag and Bundesrat are now better positioned to move important measures forward. “January is really getting underway again. The Social State Reform Commission has presented its findings, and as policymakers we must draw the necessary conclusions from that. Other commissions will present their results in the coming months” he added.
Federal politics has “a lot to do”. The Union leaders emphasised that it is their responsibility to lay down solid frameworks that support the economy, foster growth, and safeguard jobs.
