German Voters Dissatisfied with Merz

Regarding perceived political competence, 20% of German citizens believe the CDU/CSU are best equipped to address the country’s challenges, a slight decrease from the previous week The AfD follows at 11% (also down one point) The SPD and Green party remain at lower levels with 6% and 5% respectively The Left party gained one percentage point, reaching 6% Notably, almost half of those surveyed (49%) do not attribute political competence to any of the major parties

Satisfaction with the performance of CDU leader Friedrich Merz remains limited The poll shows only 29% of German citizens expressing satisfaction with his work, while 66% report dissatisfaction Support for Merz is largely confined to CDU/CSU voters (69%), whereas voters of the SPD (60%), Greens (72%), Left (89%) and AfD (94%) predominantly express dissatisfaction

Economic expectations remain largely pessimistic Only 15% of respondents anticipate an improvement in the German economic situation, while 60% foresee a deterioration A further 23% expect no change in the economic outlook

The data was collected between August 26th and September 1st, 2025, based on a sample size of 2,502 respondents
