Germany 2025: 130,000 New Large Companies, 7.6 % Growth, Registrations Hit 762 K, Closures Slightly Lower

In 2025, German authorities recorded the creation of about 130,100 firms whose legal form and employee numbers indicate a larger economic significance. According to the Statistical Office of the Federal Republic (Destatis), this represents a 7.6 % increase in new large‑scale enterprises compared to 2024. During the same period the number of complete business operations involving such firms rose by 0.8 %, reaching roughly 99,900. Thus, for 2025 – and for every year in the series dating back to 2003 – the number of newly founded large firms stayed above the number of full business tasks.

Overall, new commercial registrations (Gewerbeanmeldungen) in 2025 totaled around 640,500, up 7.7 % from the previous year. This figure includes both the founding of new commercial entities as well as acquisitions (purchase or new shareholder entry), conversions (mergers or spin‑offs), and moves from other registration districts. The aggregate number of commercial registrations, encompassing all such changes, grew by 6.4 % to about 762,400.

In contrast, the total count of fully completed commercial closures (Gewerbeaufgaben) fell slightly in 2025, down 0.2 % to roughly 502,200 compared with the year before. The overall number of commercial deregistrations (Gewerbeabmeldungen) declined 1.0 %, reaching about 612,900. These closures also cover business transfers (sales or shareholder exits), transformations, and moves to other registration districts, according to the statisticians.
