The German Federal Ministry of Defence has acknowledged Iran’s statement that it will label the armed forces of EU member states as “terrorist groups” but it currently does not foresee any concrete impact on the Bundeswehr.
“First and foremost, the safety of soldiers and all personnel on the ground is our top priority” the ministry’s spokesperson told the dts news agency on Monday in Berlin. “We are monitoring the situation closely and keep a constant exchange with both the troops on the ground and our partners, so that we can respond swiftly if necessary. At present, I have no measures to announce”.
Meanwhile, Deputy Government Spokesperson Steffen Meyer pointed to remarks by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), who had called the designation of the Bundeswehr as a terrorist organization untenable. “I have nothing to add to that” Meyer said.
