Germany Aims for 4,000 AI Startups and AI-Powered Economic Leadership by 2030

The German Federal Government plans to establish Germany as a global leader in artificial intelligence hubs. These ambitious targets are laid out in the extensive “High-Tech Agenda” roadmaps, which contain 100 pages and numerous detailed milestones.

Regarding AI specifically, the government has set several major objectives. By 2030, the country aims to cultivate 4,000 AI start-ups and achieve a substantial increase in the number of AI applications and products originating from Germany. Furthermore, Germany intends to become a “lead market” for the industrial application of AI. Specific timelines include having access to a powerful AI base model within Germany by 2027, followed by the commissioning of the first EU co-funded AI Gigafactory by 2028.

The goals extend to the core of the economy: by 2030, Germany aims for 10 percent of its economic output to be based on AI. Additionally, by 2029, half of all small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are expected to be integrating AI into their core business processes. Achieving these goals requires a profound, joint effort involving the federal government, the states, the European Union, and business associations, who will contribute through consulting services and academic institutions.
