Germany and Hungary announced a commitment to renewing and strengthening their bilateral partnership. In a joint statement released by Foreign Ministers Johann Wadephul and Anita Orbán, the two nations expressed a desire to embark on a new chapter of trust in their relationship and jointly shape the future within the European Union.
The ministers affirmed that in the face of geopolitical and geo-economic challenges, both countries remain dedicated, as EU members and NATO allies, to working together for a strong, secure, free, and competitive Europe.
On the economic front, the ministers underscored the significance of cooperation, particularly within the automotive industry and other economic sectors. They pledged to further expand bilateral trade and extend cooperation into additional areas. Furthermore, both nations emphasized that strengthening the European single market is vital for fostering an innovation-friendly investment environment in both countries. Additionally, both Germany and Hungary stressed the shared need for coordinated action regarding energy security and combating illegal migration.
Turning to international affairs, Germany and Hungary reaffirmed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war. Both countries also stated their commitment to intensifying efforts to promote peace and security in the Middle East. Moreover, they highlighted the importance of integrating the Western Balkan countries into the European Union and supporting candidate nations during that process.
To bolster civil and political ties, the two countries agreed to strengthen the German-Hungarian Forum for the Dialogue between Politics and Civil Society. The next gathering of this forum, scheduled for autumn 2026 in Berlin, is intended to serve as a visible symbol of this renewed beginning in German-Hungarian relations.
