Germany and Turkey Settle Döner Dispute

A protracted dispute concerning the definition and regulation of the döner kebab between Turkey and Germany has concluded. The matter, which sparked considerable debate across Europe, originated from an application submitted by the International Döner Association (Udofed) in Istanbul to the European Union. Udofed sought to register döner as a “guaranteed traditional specialty” proposing recipes markedly different from those commonly found in Germany. The proposed regulations would have mandated adherence to strict Turkish production standards for all döner sold within the EU.

However, the application has now been withdrawn. According to a spokesperson for the European Commission’s agriculture department, the withdrawal, effective September 23, 2025, automatically terminates the registration process.

The news has been met with considerable relief from German döner producers. Erdogan Koc, spokesperson for the German Döner Producers Association, stated that the outcome ensures the preservation and potential expansion of döner variety within Germany.

The controversy had previously drawn public commentary from various stakeholders, including former German Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir, who voiced support for the German interpretation of the dish, emphasizing the right of individuals to determine how it is prepared and consumed. The resolution avoids potential EU-wide standardization and allows for continued regional variations in döner production.
