Germany Appoints Controversial New Intelligence Chief

The German Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced its intention to nominate Sinan Selen as the new President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The announcement, released Monday evening, follows reports circulating throughout the day.

According to a statement from the Ministry, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has informed employees of the Federal Office of his plans. Dobrindt emphasized Selen’s extensive experience in the security sector, highlighting his expertise in combating crime and terrorism, as well as his skills in counter-espionage and cyber defense.

“With Sinan Selen, an exceptionally experienced security expert is assuming leadership of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution” Dobrindt stated. He expressed confidence that Selen will lead the office successfully, demonstrating both prudence and resolve.

Earlier on Monday, the Ministry declined to confirm the reports, noting that they had “taken note” of media coverage regarding the potential appointment. The formal confirmation and transition are expected to follow shortly.
