Germany Backs New Ukraine Aid Package via NATO Fund

International partners are preparing a new round of financial aid for Ukraine, with Germany committing to contribute to an initial package coordinated through a newly established mechanism. Following a virtual meeting involving Chancellor Friedrich Merz alongside US President Donald Trump, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and several European heads of state, the German Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence announced Wednesday that Germany will help finance a support package potentially valued at up to 500 million US dollars.

The aid initiative, operating under the “PURL” (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) mechanism, is designed to address Ukraine’s most urgent military needs in the face of ongoing Russian aggression. President Trump announced plans for multiple aid packages on July 14th, with NATO tasked with coordinating implementation and ensuring relevance to Ukraine’s most pressing requirements. Funding will be provided by European partners and Canada.

According to official statements, the support packages will focus on military goods not currently produced sufficiently within Europe, or which the United States can deliver more rapidly than European or Canadian partners. This will include critical air defense capabilities vital for countering continued Russian aerial attacks.

Germany has, since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, committed approximately 40 billion euros in bilateral military assistance to Ukraine, with further support pledged for future years.
