The German federal government has boosted its funding for a “AI Gigafactory” project by approximately €200 million, raising the total allocation to €1 billion. According to information provided by the Federal Ministry of Research to Politico’s “Technology and AI” newsletter, the government previously had earmarked around €805 million for the venture.
The Ministry stated that the additional funds were allocated as part of an adjustment to the government’s planning in the budget, aiming to support the construction of a major AI Gigafactory in Germany and underline the government’s high ambitions, thereby aligning plans with broader considerations at the EU level. A spokesperson confirmed that the increased funds have already been incorporated into the budget planning, with the money sourced from the Special Fund for Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality (SVIK).
This national effort comes as the EU Commission published the long-awaited tender for AI Gigafactories last Thursday. A total of seven facilities are planned across Europe, including one in Germany, fulfilling the federal government’s requirements.
