Germany Calls for UN Security Council Reform

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has urged the United Nations to undertake a significant reform of the UN Security Council, advocating for its expansion to better reflect the current global landscape. Addressing the UN General Debate in New York on Saturday, Wadephul emphasized the need to modernize the Security Council after 80 years of operation.

“We must ensure that this institution reflects the world as it is today” Wadephul stated, highlighting the necessity for an increase in both permanent and non-permanent seats on the Council to address existing global realities.

The German government believes that additional permanent seats should be allocated to regions currently underrepresented on the Security Council, specifically citing Africa, Asia and Latin America. Wadephul underscored the UN’s imperative to be proactive and responsive to emerging challenges.

Germany is formally seeking a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the period of 2027/2028. In connection with this candidacy, Wadephul drew attention to the critical humanitarian situations unfolding in Sudan and Gaza. He also strongly condemned Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine.
