German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has strongly condemned the violation of Polish airspace by armed Russian drones.
Speaking on Wednesday, Merz stated that Russia had put lives at risk within a state belonging to both NATO and the European Union. He described the incident as the latest in a series of provocations in the Baltic Sea region and along NATO’s eastern flank and affirmed the German government’s firm condemnation of this aggressive Russian action.
Merz praised Poland’s response, noting it was positive that Poland, in conjunction with its NATO allies, identified and mitigated the threat promptly. At Poland’s request, the NATO Council convened today to discuss the Russian action under Article 4 of the NATO Treaty. He reaffirmed NATO’s readiness and commitment to defense.
