The German Federal Minister of Health, Nina Warken (CDU), has indicated that short-term adjustments to benefits within the statutory health insurance system are a possibility as the government seeks to manage contributions.
Speaking to RTL and ntv, Minister Warken stated that the government is currently discussing a package of measures designed to stabilize health insurance contributions. She acknowledged several potential options that could lead to savings in the short term, though emphasized that discussions remain at a preliminary stage, focusing on broader strategic direction rather than specific actions.
Warken also urged Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) to provide additional federal subsidies to health insurance funds. She has repeatedly advocated for supplemental funding from the national budget to support the system while the government’s ongoing reforms take effect, a process she expects will take considerable time. This necessitates either increased financial support or consideration of short-term measures to stabilize contributions.
Regarding a suggestion put forward by her parliamentary state secretary, Tino Sorge, to introduce a basic health insurance plan supplemented by optional add-on services, Minister Warken responded cautiously. She indicated that the concept could be explored within the federal reform commission but stressed that it is not a measure currently under preparation.
