German political factions within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) are currently exploring potential regulations concerning social media access for younger users. Discussions center on the possibility of introducing an age restriction, setting a limit of 16 years for platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
The considerations, as articulated by parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” stem from concerns about the impact of these platforms on adolescent brain development. Spahn cited research from neuroscientists who have drawn parallels between the reward mechanisms triggered by platforms like Instagram and TikTok and those associated with substances such as heroin.
Acknowledging the seriousness of implementing such restrictions, Spahn emphasized that bans are a significant measure, drawing a comparison to existing age limits on alcohol and nicotine, implemented to safeguard the developing brains of young people.
While no final decisions have been reached, Spahn confirmed that the potential impact of platforms like TikTok is under careful evaluation. He suggested that if the effects prove comparable to those of addictive substances, action will be necessary. The party is currently weighing the benefits and drawbacks of tighter restrictions on social media usage for minors.
