The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) is establishing an advisory board focused on the security and defense industry. According to reports from Politico, citing information from the ministry, the new panel aims to facilitate rapid expansion and modernization within the sector.
The advisory group will comprise a diverse range of experts, including Moritz Schularick, President of the Kiel Institute for World Economics; René Obermann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Airbus; Nico Lange, Senior Fellow at the Munich Security Conference; and retired Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart.
The primary function of the board will be to advise the BMWK on strategies to accelerate the growth of advanced technological capabilities within the defense industry. Focus areas will include high-tech manufacturing, space exploration, artificial intelligence, robotics, satellite communication and emerging technologies.
The advisory body is tasked with developing scientific concepts and offering recommendations related to current challenges within the security and defense economy, subsequently supporting the BMWK’s leadership in implementing these strategies. The members will serve in a voluntary capacity.
This initiative follows the establishment of an economic advisory group in June, which includes Veronika Grimm, Volker Wieland and Justus Haucap. The BMWK maintains a separate scientific advisory board in addition to these new formations.
