Germany Debates Military Draft Youth Voices Needed

The debate surrounding potential reintroduction of mandatory military service in Germany needs to include the perspectives of younger generations, according to Kevin Gniosdorz, chairman of the Young Union (JU) in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Gniosdorz acknowledged the necessity of a defense-capable Germany and indicated support for the concept of conscription in principle. However, he emphasized the importance of incorporating the views of young people, stating that any such measure should be developed collaboratively and not imposed upon them. He highlighted that the topic is subject to considerable discussion within the Young Union, reflecting diverse opinions.

Beyond the conscription debate, Gniosdorz expressed concerns regarding the increasing acceptance of government debt. He voiced apprehension over bipartisan efforts to ease fiscal constraints, warning that future generations will ultimately bear the financial burden. He noted that the Young Union recognizes a significant deficit in decades-long investment in infrastructure. Gniosdorz cautioned against the approach advocated by some politicians, particularly in neighboring Lower Saxony, who are proposing to fully utilize revised debt regulations in the coming years, describing it as “fatal.

Gniosdorz is currently seeking re-election at the NRW Young Union conference this weekend.
